Judge Sentences Child Molester To Prison
A judge Thursday sentenced Gilbert Martines to 10
years in prison
for luring a 12-year-old boy into his apartment for
sex.
Martines has worked as a schoolteacher and a funeral
director.(THIS WAS TO GET RID OF BODIES FOR THE FAMILY
Di Familia)
Prosecutors also called him a sexual predator.
In January, he pleaded guilty to attempted sexual
assault and
promoting child abuse.
Prosecutors said that on April 15 and April 17, 1999,
Martines
used his "X-Files" and comic book collection to lure a
12-year-old boy into his McCully apartment for sex.
"I'd like to apologize to this court, your honor, the
prosecutor,
my attorney, my family and friends," Martines told the
court. "I
take full responsibility and blame no one."
Prosecutors said that to this day, Martines' victim is
suffering
and that Martines is the worst type of sexual
predator, a repeat
offender who targets children.
Martines admitted that young boys are his preferred
sexual
partners, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors said that Martines molested two boys in
the early
1980s and was sentenced to probation. Police also
investigated
another incident involving Martines in 1989.
Circuit Judge Rey Graulty told Martines that he should
be sent to
prison for the rest of his life. However, because the
judge was
bound by the conditions of the plea agreement, Graulty
handed
down the 10-year prison term.
Martines' attorney called the sentence fair.

Gilbert Martines, a registered sex offender who in
1984 was sentenced to
5 years imprisonment for the sexual assult of two
young boys, was
charged today with the sexual assault of a 12 year old
boy. There may be
other victims. Martines, a 51 year old male, invited
many neighborhood
children into his home to play video games on his big
screen TV. As
required by law, his name and current address is
listed in the registry
of sex offenders. Though his neighbors hadn't checked
the registry, at
least one was suspicious. She thought it was weird
that so many
children, unaccompanied by parents, visited his
apartment.

Neighbors describe the apartment of Gilbert Martines
as a child's play
room. Police today charged Martines, a convicted sex
offender, with
assaulting a 12-year-old boy in that apartment. As
Beth Hillyer tells
us, police fear there may be other victims. Police
charged 51 year old
Gilbert Martines with sexually assaulting a 12 year
old boy in his
McCully apartment. "We are also concerned this
particular offender may
have been preying on other people," says Det. Leetha
Decaires, Honolulu
Police.
"I told them I usually see him with kids coming in and
out. There's no
parents,
two teenage boys, two other young kids maybe
8 or 7
that's
about it," says a neighbor. Neighbors describe his
apartment as a
child's playroom packed with high tech toys and video
games. This woman
says she was suspicious of Martines. "He was trying to
get my six year
old son to go into his apartment and play Play Station
because he has a
big screen TV with the games. I thought it was weird
because only
children come in and out," continues a neighbor. A
mother who lives
nearby but didn't want to be interviewed says the news
of the arrest of
Gilbert Martines concerns here because her son would
play in this
apartment often.
Martines was sentenced to five years for assaulting
two boys aged 12 and
15 back in 1984. By law he's required to register as a
sex offender and
according to the computer he's listed in the registry
with his current
address in McCully. The neighbor says she never
checked the registry,
however she relied on what she calls a mother's
intuition.
